What Is the Sony Creative Science Award?

The Sony Creative Science Award (SCSA) is Singapore’s flagship toy-making competition for primary school students, jointly organised by Science Centre Singapore and Sony Group of Companies in Singapore, with support from the Ministry of Education. Now in its 29th year, the competition challenges students to design and build original toys that demonstrate scientific principles in a fun and engaging way.

Who Can Participate?

The competition is open to all Primary 1 to 6 students in Singapore, divided into two categories:

  • Junior WhizKid: Primary 1 & 2
  • WhizKid: Primary 3 to 6

Students may participate individually or in pairs. Each entry must be accompanied by a supervising teacher or parent.

Key Dates

  • Registration opens: 2 March 2026
  • Registration deadline: 10 July 2026
  • Final judging & award ceremony: November 2026

Why Participate?

The SCSA provides a platform for young innovators to apply classroom science concepts to hands-on toy creation. Past winning toys have ranged from simple mechanical puzzles to electronic games, all designed with recycled materials where possible.

Participants will:

  • Develop creativity, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
  • Gain exposure to scientific inquiry and the engineering design process.
  • Have a chance to win attractive prizes, including Sony electronic products and trophies.

How to Apply

Registration is done online via the official form: https://for.edu.sg/scsa2026forma. Schools are encouraged to organise internal selection rounds and submit entries on behalf of students.

Judging Criteria

Entries are evaluated on:

  • Scientific concept (30%): How well the toy demonstrates a scientific principle.
  • Creativity and originality (30%): Uniqueness of the toy design.
  • Functionality and durability (20%): Does the toy work as intended?
  • Workmanship (20%): Quality of construction and use of materials.

Support for Teachers

Science Centre Singapore provides teacher workshops and resource guides to help educators mentor students. Schools can also request a visit from the SCSA outreach team for hands-on guidance.

Past Success Stories

In previous editions, students have created toys like a balloon-powered car, a magnetic maze, and a working model of a crane. Many winners have gone on to represent Singapore in international competitions such as the International Young Inventors Project Olympiad.

Conclusion

The Sony Creative Science Award is more than a competition-it's a celebration of curiosity and ingenuity. With the 2026 edition now open for registration, primary school students across Singapore have the opportunity to turn their creative ideas into tangible, playful inventions. Don’t miss the deadline on 10 July 2026!
