2026 International Joint Initiative for Research Harnessing Disruptive Technologies to Address Global Challenges

The NFRF 2026 International Joint Initiative supports international, interdisciplinary research projects that harness disruptive technologies to address UN Sustainable Development Goals or other global challenges. Projects must involve at least three co-principal investigators from different participating funding organizations, with one PI eligible for Canada's NFRF. Teams must integrate expertise from at least two of three domains (natural sciences/engineering, social sciences/humanities, health/life sciences) and demonstrate mandatory co-development with non-academic stakeholders including government, industry, and community organizations.

Open to international, interdisciplinary research teams with at least three co-principal investigators from different funding organizations. At least one PI must be eligible for Canada's NFRF. Projects must integrate expertise from at least two of three domains (natural sciences/engineering, social sciences/humanities, health/life sciences) and involve stakeholders in co-development. Participating funding organizations include those from Canada, UK, Ireland, Netherlands, Brazil, Spain, Switzerland, Taiwan, NordForsk countries (Åland Islands, Denmark, Finland, Faroe Islands, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden), Ghana, Indonesia, Namibia, Peru, Rwanda, and Zimbabwe.

Criteri di ammissibilità

Teams must include at least three Principal Investigators (PIs), each eligible for funding from a different participating funding organization
At least one PI must be eligible for NFRF funding (Canadian)
The project must be eligible to receive funds from at least three participating funding organizations
The NFRF-eligible PI must be an 'independent researcher' at a Canadian institution holding full agency eligibility
Projects must integrate expertise from at least two of three disciplinary domains: (1) natural sciences and engineering, (2) social sciences and humanities, and (3) health and life sciences
Projects must involve co-development and co-leadership with stakeholders and end-users from academia, government, not-for-profit, community organizations, or private industry
Research must address at least one UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) or provide justification for another recognized global challenge
Students, postdoctoral fellows, and research associates are ineligible for PI, Co-PI, or co-applicant roles
