Het doel van de EIC Pathfinder is om theoretische principes uit te werken tot een proof-of-principle, die aantoont dat het concept of de theorie haalbaar is. Hiermee kan de wetenschappelijke basis voor nieuwe, baanbrekende technologieën worden ontwikkeld. Het instrument richt zich op ambitieuze ideeën die kunnen leiden tot vernieuwende innovaties en nieuwe markten.
