You must be employed by an eligible research organisation. International researchers can apply as project co-lead (international). Businesses, charities and third sector organisations cannot lead unless they are approved UKRI Independent Research Organisations.

Eligibility criteria

You must be employed by an eligible research organisation.
You must show that you will direct the project and be actively engaged in the work.
Applicants without a contract of employment for the duration of the project must have contracts extended beyond the end date and all necessary support provided.
You can only be project lead on one application at a time across MRC’s applicant-led responsive funding opportunities.
Uninvited resubmissions of applications submitted after 1 April 2026 will not be accepted.
International research organisations cannot lead unless they are MRC Unit The Gambia at LSHTM or MRC/UVRI and LSHTM Uganda Research Unit.
Businesses, charities and third sector organisations cannot apply as project lead or project co-lead unless they are approved UKRI Independent Research Organisations.
